Introduction

Most IoT devices communicate with the Avelon system via LoRaWAN. LoRaWAN is what is known as an LPWAN (Low Power Wide Area Network) for IoT devices and is an efficient, flexible and economical solution when cellular and Wi-Fi based networks are ineffective. It’s a standard for wireless communication that allows IoT devices to securely communicate over large distances with minimal battery usage. However, it works using a low data rate and can be used in specific use cases.

Using radio communication, the data is first sent from the IoT device to one or more gateways, also called modem or access points. The gateways receive information from the devices in their range and process it. The data from the gateways is sent via LoRaWAN to a public LPWAN service provider, which ultimately forwards it to Avelon Cloud.
