Introduction

This chapter provides an overview of the product and serves as a quick introduction to the installation and operation of Avelon Beetle.

How it works

Avelon Cloud is the online platform combining energy management, control system and management of real estate and facilities.

Beetle is a VPN and Internet router, data concentrator, database and web server. The smart Beetles elegantly replace common host computer infrastructures of medium and small systems. As industrial PCs, they offer a high level of performance based on the Linux operating system with SQL database, web server and connection options to automation and the Internet.

Internet connections are generally not fail-safe. With a Beetle, important tasks such as alarm monitoring, data recording and checking communication remain on site with the systems.

The devices also establish bidirectional communication with the Avelon servers via closed Internet routers or via mobile phone Internet connections with private IPs. Thus, you can also access plants via standard Internet connections without delay, retrieve live values or set new parameters.

The Beetle technology platform offers a wide range of interfaces and protocols. With the Beetles, your application is perfectly equipped for smart metering and automation projects.

Brief overview of the system architecture

Avelon offers two basic systems: Avelon Cloud and Alcedo Inhouse. With Avelon Cloud the Beetles reliably take over all necessary functions on site, such as data recording or alarm checking. The servers are located in a certified bank computer center near Zurich.

Avelon Cloud

Avelon Cloud is the cloud solution of Avelon system, which does not require server hardware/capacity on site.

Alcedo Inhouse

Alcedo Inhouse is built according to the classic architecture of a SCADA system. A server system is part of a (local) network. All communication protocols run directly on the server.

Alcedo Inhouse is based on a modern infrastructure. It is delivered as a virtual appliance that can be easily integrated into existing VMWare or Hyper-V environments.

For large systems Alcedo Inhouse can be combined with several locally distributed Beetles. For example the Beetles can relieve the control system by reading meters via local bus systems.
